March What’s On by ARTNOW

In mid-March, diving into spring with some art is a fantastic idea. There are new exhibitions, the annual group show at MeMeraki, a research workshop, and a bunch of other art happenings in Limassol, Nicosia, and Paphos. ARTNOW Magazine has put together a to-do list for all art lovers out there.

The “On Being Blue”, a solo show by Christopher Christou

Christopher Christou through his solo exhibition employs a visual language that is simultaneously forceful and sensitive, inviting viewers to contemplate the singular, multifaceted nature of self. His work draws inspiration from the insightful words of William H. Gass (1976): “Blue is the colour of the mind in borrow of the body; it is the colour consciousness becomes when caressed.”

The “Labyrinth of the very big and deafening nothingness” by Georgia Christou

Christou’s work examines the politics associated with inside and outside spaces, in an attempt to expose the ways in which womxn operate within them.Using herself as a medium of research, she enters public spaces and her immediate social circles to observe how expressive, feminist, activist, queer forces are being suppressed or silenced by the deafening noise of patriarchal and colonial undercurrents.

Annual group show at MeMeraki 

MeMeraki is hosting its second Annual Group Show. 

As usual, the art residency is sustaining the dialogue between the local community and the art scene locally and internationally. Participating artists are Molly Lowe, Suzana Phiala, Renay Roussou, Hannah Rowan, and Andria Zachariou.

Water Towers: Mysterious Architectures by Cathrine Art Organisation

The water towers of Cyprus, France and the Netherlands are the focal points of this photography exhibition. Examining their architecture, the group show takes viewers on a geographical and cultural journey through the eyes of three photographers. Showcasing their work are Demetris Loutsios (CY), Jo Brunenberg (NL) and Fons Brasser (FR), who capture the bizarre structures of the water towers in the three countries along with their magnificent mechanical insides.

”ARIZONA, CY” by Nicos Philippou and Marilena Zackheos 

“Arizona, CY” forms connections between the island of Cyprus and the Southwestern US state of Arizona through original poems and instant photographs that re-envision prevalent perceptions of Cyprus’s physical and social spaces.

The “Closer to A Sustained Caress: Contemporary Readings of Printmaking» group exhibition 

This group exhibition features work by seven invited artists who live and work in Cyprus alongside prints from the collection of Hambis Printmaking Museum, gathered over a long period of artists’ workshops, by exchanges between artists, donations and acquisitions. The artists in this show incorporate printmaking in their practice, each in their own way, to touch upon issues of locality and memory, human and more-than-human entanglements, love and sensuality.

The “Metalhead» exhibition by Christos Kyriakides

Metalhead thrashes through the poetics of the negative space between a house constructed out of adobe and stones, and the theory of a gadget house by Reyner Banham. The show's low-pitched vocals come into correspondence with the exhibition space, which was previously used as a wood machinery import company office, and nowadays functions as a car park.

The “Head and Hand walking” master class by Kyriaki Costa

Researcher Kyriaki Costa conducts the workshop to develop a project that deals with the poetic familiarization of public space, by locating all those points of the urban environment which will feed and attract thoughts regarding the way with which a contemporary civilian can connect with their town.

«Ένα σακί σώμα» by Katerina Stavrou at Diatopos Art Center 

Stavrou experiments with various materials and techniques to approach and redefine the body and its form, creating sculptures and installations that indicate her personal searches.An important role in the exhibition is also played by sketches, which are an integral part of her initial research with a living model, functioning as studies of body, form and volume that later result in three-dimensional sculptural forms and installation.

The "a carcass / το ψοφίμι" exhibition by Yiannis Sakellis 

The exhibition investigates the dual aspect of the human body, It juxtaposes the vivid eroticism of the female form with the mortal remains of a human carcass.
